Thailand is a country very rich in vegetation. There are many different kinds of fruits that grow in Thailand and everyone who has visited Thailand will forever remember the abundance of delicious choices that can be found everywhere.
Apart from the “usual suspects” like watermelon, pineapple and mango you can also find more exotic fruits like the durian, the mangosteen and the jackfruit.
I remember the first time I travelled to Thailand. I felt like in paradise, because I could just walk across the street and a vendor would cut open a coconut for me, stick a straw in and I could drink sweet, delicious coconut juice right out of the coconut.
Nowadays some unique kinds of Thai fruits are endangered unfortunately.
This is mainly because of economic pressure on the farmers. Only certain kinds of fruits get good prices on the market, thus farmers of course grow these kinds of fruits.
The fruits that are being left behind are rare kinds of durian and mangosteen, and lesser known Thai fruits like the mapood, the madun and the srilaman.
An official from the Thai Department of Agriculture said that many of these plants have medicinal properties.
It’s all because of mono-cropping. Fortunately there are government agencies who are aware of this and try to counteract it by planting these fruits in “green herb banks” - but it can’t be stated that this will prevent these rare fruits from dying out.
Writing some letters or blog posts is a good idea. Governments seldom take issues serious until they notice that the public is concerned about them, that’s why voicing an opinion is important. After all they represent the public.
